Is the ARGO AH a Kit Helicopter?

The manufacturer's answer is no. Here it is in their words.

No. Manufaktura Lotnicza answers that question directly on its own site, and the answer is that the ARGO AH is not a kit helicopter. Building at home is prohibited outright: in their words, all of their aircraft are fully constructed in their factory under the direct supervision of licensed professionals. The purchase agreement requires the owner to attend the factory workshops and finish the aircraft there, alongside the people who build them - which is the opposite of a traditional kit, not a version of one.

That is what places the aircraft in the amateur-built category, and the manufacturer is explicit that the category is not a statement about how it is made: the airframe is built to comply with EASA CS-VLR, the certification specification a newly certified helicopter has to meet. Their four answers below set this out in full.

This page previously used the phrase “51% kit”. That was our wording and it was wrong - it is an American term for a category the ARGO AH is not sold in, and the manufacturer has never used it. The four answers below are reproduced from argo.aero word for word, so that what you read here is what the people who build the aircraft actually say.

One thing to know before the rest: we cannot sell you one onto the UK register today. The ARGO AH is not yet certified in the United Kingdom - our gyroplane is completing its certification first and the helicopter is next in the programme.

The manufacturer's own answers, word for word

Is the ARGO AH a kit helicopter?

No, traditional kit helicopters give you the opportunity to build the aircraft yourself away from the controlled environment of a factory with little supervision. The ARGO AH can be built in MANUFAKTURA Aerospace's manufacturing facility, state-of-the-art production equipment and carefully controlled manufacturing processes, while all owners are supported and guided by our highly skilled production staff.

The ARGO AH purchase agreement requires owner-operators to attend our comprehensive factory workshops to complete the aircraft, learning invaluable skills and understanding of the aircraft, its systems and how to ensure it remains in airworthy condition. Our philosophy is to provide not only a luxury helicopter, but also an ownership experience that enhances knowledge, skills, understanding and, above all, safety.

Does an amateur-built/experimental aircraft category mean the ARGO AH doesn't meet certifications standards?

Not at all. In order to demonstrate the airworthiness of the ARGO AH, Aircraft MANUFACTURE is required to fully comply with EASA CS-VLR Very Light Rotorcraft (UK/European) regulations.

These are the latest certification standards for normal category rotorcraft, harmonized worldwide by ICAO. These are the exact standards that a new certified helicopter would have to meet to demonstrate airworthiness. The one factor that differentiates the ARGO AH from traditionally certified aircraft is that we chose to involve owners in the manufacturing process, because a fundamental part of our product offering is that we not only sell a great helicopter, but also equip pilots with the skills and knowledge they need to be safe and informed helicopter owner-operators.

Can I fly the ARGO AH in my country?

Yes! MANUFACTURING AIRCRAFT is submitting all applications for unrestricted operational approval beyond private operation of the aircraft in each country where it is purchased.

AH's full compliance with recognized certification standards, along with increased fulfillment of amateur requirements, including approved maintenance and training programs, will help expedite the process and secure approval in your country.

Does MANUFAKTURA Lotnicza amateur-built/experimental category short cut regulations?

Absolutely not. All aircraft, from single-seat domestic designs to A380s, must meet strict airworthiness and certification requirements. The ARGO AH meets all the latest EASA and FAA requirements pertaining to very light helicopters, which in most cases are much more stringent than light helicopters flying today, which were certified under much older regulations.

One of the key differences in the amateur-built/experimental category is the owner's involvement in the construction process. While this category allows owner-operators to construct at home and under limited supervision, the Aircraft MANUFACTURE absolutely prohibits this practice. All of our aircraft are fully constructed in our factory under the direct supervision of licensed professionals. In this way, we can ensure the highest level of safety, quality and airworthiness to ensure complete customer satisfaction.

Since certification is best suited for commercial operations, and more than 80% of ultra-light helicopters are privately owned, we believe that offering our high quality AH using technology amateur/experimental is the best way to deliver an innovative, safe aircraft at an affordable purchase and operating price.

What it costs to keep

Two structural things hold the running cost down, and neither is a discount.

It drinks the fuel your car drinks. About 25 litres an hour of ordinary 95-octane unleaded rather than avgas - roughly £34.88 an hour, and the largest single line in the budget. The second half of that is not money at all: road petrol is everywhere, avgas is only where somebody sells it, which widens the map of where the aircraft can live and be filled.

An aircraft that sits does not age into a bill. A 2,000-hour conditional TBO with no 12-year calendar overhaul of airframe or engine removes calendar depreciation - the thing that quietly punishes private owners who fly fifty hours a year rather than five hundred.

The full breakdown, from the manufacturer's own line-by-line document rather than our estimate, is in what a two-seat helicopter costs to buy and run, and the model-by-model prices are in what the AH-22, AH-23 and AH-24 cost.

The weight sum, before anything else

A two-seat helicopter has two seats. Whether it carries two adults and full fuel is a different question, and it is the one buyers work out last when it should be first.

600 kg maximum take-off weight against about 380 kg empty leaves roughly 220 kg for people and fuel, and 2.6 hours of fuel is about 47 kg. Run that with your own two names in it.

Where the UK stands

Certification here proceeds model by model, and a helicopter is not a bigger gyroplane as far as the paperwork is concerned. Our gyroplane is completing BCAR-T; a helicopter is approved to Certificate of Airworthiness standards instead, which is an approval in its own right and a further step up in the factory's systems rather than an extension of the first one.

So the useful thing you can do now is tell us what you are after - two seats or three, kit or finished, glass panel or classic instruments - and we will tell you exactly where that configuration stands and what it will cost. We would rather give you a real date than an optimistic one.

Frequently asked questions

Is the ARGO AH a kit helicopter?

No - it is the opposite of one. A traditional kit lets you build the aircraft yourself, away from a factory and with little supervision, and Manufaktura Lotnicza prohibits that outright: all of their aircraft are fully constructed in their factory under the direct supervision of licensed professionals. The purchase agreement requires the owner to attend the factory workshops and finish the aircraft there, alongside the people who build them, which is what places it in the amateur-built category. The airframe complies with EASA CS-VLR, the certification specification a newly certified helicopter must meet.

How much does the ARGO AH helicopter cost?

The ARGO AH-22 is published from £220,000 with classic instruments, excluding taxes and delivery. A Garmin G3X glass cockpit, the larger engines and any cargo equipment are specified on top. Running it costs about £97 per flying hour at 150 hours a year on the manufacturer's own estimate, the largest line being 25 litres an hour of ordinary 95-octane road petrol rather than avgas.

Can I buy an ARGO AH in the UK right now?

Not from us today, and we would rather say so than take a deposit against a date we cannot promise. The ARGO AH is not yet certified in the United Kingdom. Our ARGON GTL gyroplane is completing BCAR-T certification first and the helicopter is next in the programme - and a helicopter is approved to Certificate of Airworthiness standards rather than to BCAR-T, so it is a separate approval rather than an extension of the gyroplane one. Tell us what you are after and we will tell you where it stands.

Is a light helicopter expensive to keep?

Less than most people assume, and the reasons are structural. The ARGO AH runs a 2,000-hour conditional TBO with no 12-year calendar overhaul of the aircraft or the engine, so an aircraft that sits does not age into an overhaul bill - calendar depreciation is essentially removed. It burns ordinary road petrol rather than avgas, which is both cheaper per litre and available in far more places.

How much can a two-seat light helicopter carry?

Do this sum before anything else. The AH-22 has a 600 kg maximum take-off weight against an empty weight of about 380 kg, leaving roughly 220 kg for people and fuel, and a full 2.6 hours of fuel is about 47 kg. Two adults and full tanks is a calculation to run with your own two names in it, not an assumption.

Why complete a helicopter yourself rather than buy it finished?

Two reasons owners give. The build is where you learn the aircraft - not from a manual afterwards but from the people who make it, which changes what you can inspect, diagnose and sign for over the life of the machine. And the participation is what places the aircraft in the amateur-built category, which carries a different maintenance regime from a factory-finished certified aircraft.

And if you are still choosing: how to judge a two-seat helicopter, six tests that work on any aircraft including ours.
